Under his leadership the forestry association of Nigeria has successfully implemented community-based measures to combat desertification in northern Nigeria.
Yasin El Hag Abdin
Dr. Abdin initiated environmental legislation in Sudan and is a member of the national committee for the environment.
He played a leading role in formulating the 1982 Red Sea and Gulf of Aden convention for the nine states in the region on the management of marine resources. The convention is part of UNEP's Regional Seas programme.
Mr. Abadi has planted and protected over 1,800 trees near his village of Senafe, Eritrea, to help meet local fuelwood needs.
His achievement is an inspiration to similar communities in arid areas.
