Charles L. Caccia

Charles Caccia was born and educated in MilanoItaly. He graduated in Forestry Economics at the University ofVienna in 1954, and, a year later, immigrated to Canada.

Mr. Caccia was first elected to public office as member of the City of Toronto and Metro councils in 1964. In 1968 he was elected to the House of Commons and subsequently re-elected nine times. He served as Liberal M.P. forDavenport for 36 years, until June 2004.

In September 1981, Prime Minister Trudeau appointed him Minister of Labour, and in August 1983, Minister of the Environment. From September 1984 to November 1988 he acted as Liberal Opposition Critic on environment issues.

Charles Caccia chaired the Standing Committee of the House of Commons on Environment and Sustainable Development from 1994 to 2004 as well as the Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association from 1994 to 2004.

He is presently Senior Fellow at the Institute of the Environment, University of Ottawa. He is president of the non-governmental organization Green Cross-Canada and, since December 2004, has been member of the Advisory Committee on Environment of the City of Ottawa.

His current activities involve issues of nuclear waste, climate change, use of pesticides, air and water pollution, urban sprawl, protection of pollinators and boreal forest.
