Bamburi Portland Cement Ltd

This company successfully "greened" their entire factory and quarry sites by tree planting and landscaping. A self-sustaining and self-financing integrated forest ecosystem has been established covering an area of 200 hectares with over 1.5 million trees planted.

It is a model for Africa and indeed the world in environmental rehabilitation of industrial wastelands.

Asociacion Peruana para la Conservacion de la Naturaleza

A Peruvian non-profit organisation committed to the conservation and management of biological diversity. Since its inception in 1982, APECO has conducted research projects such as conservation status for yellow-tailed monkey, penguins, shore birds, the faunal inventory of Rio Abiseo National Park, conservation and development in Lake Titicaca National Reserve.

Since 1990, a new strategy has been developed based on the concept of integrated conservation program. The first integrated conservation program that APECO has launched seeks to control the rate of deforestation and to conserve biological diversity of the mountain forest Northeast of Peru.

Arab Office for Youth and Environment (AOYE)


AOYE is the leading non-governmental organisation of its kind in the Arab world. Formed in 1978, it holds environmental seminars, workshops and training courses for young people and is involved in tree planting-campaigns. It publishes a bi-monthly bulletin and magazine, and translates proceedings of major environmental conferences into Arabic.

World Organisation of the Scout Movement

The Scout Organisation has a long history of efforts to protect natural environments and teach conservation to millions of young people all over the world.

The organisation has recently begun active cooperation with UNEP to strengthen these activities throughout its global organisation.

World Assembly of Youth (Way)

World Assembly of Youth (Way)

WAY is the coordinating committee of national youth councils and youth organisations which has helped to increase environmental awareness among youth worldwide - and to implement UNEP's youth environmental agenda.

Founded in 1949, WAY has the highest consultitive status "I" with the United Nations System. WAY works in close cooperation with the UN agencies: UNFPA, WHO, UNICEF, UNEP, UNDP, UNESCO, and CSDHA.

WAY recognises the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the basis of its action and of its services and works for the promotion of youth and their organizations in programme areas such as: democracy, environment, human rights, population, health, drugs, community development, and leadership training.

Shanyi Village

 

Shanyi Village, a community of 3000, between 1984 and 1987 made major energy savings by the introduction of improved cooking stoves and biogas. It reforested its environs, and improved water supply and housing.
