Mr. Fonseca has been a member of the Comision Permanente del Pacifico Sur (Permanent Commission of the South Pacific) since 1980, and as Secretary-General from 1986. He has forged closer links among the five member states - Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Peru - and contributed significantly to the commission's joint programme with UNEP for protection of the region's marine environment.
Alegria Fonseca Barrera
Ms. Fonseca is a member of the Colombian Parliament, and a lawyer who succeeded in reversing the decision of the government to build a tourist hotel in the National Park of Tayrona. She also defeated a decision to construct an industrial area in the National Park of Salamanca Island and initiated the Forest Action Plan for Colombia. She is the founder of the Alma Foundation dedicated to monitor and educate people about the natural environment. Ms. Fonseca also stimulates public awareness through writing books and radio programmes, and has launched reafforestation, tree nursery and community projects by organising a reafforestation unit in every community.
