Fundacion para la Defensa del Ambiente (FUNAM)
FUNAM was awarded the "Conservar el Futuro" Annual Prize by the National Park Administration and the Bigua Prize from Cordoba's non-governmental organisations (NG0s). As an NGO FUNAM developed research, environmental education and a wide environmental network. Its "Children's Environment Defenders Club" has a membership of more than 1,000 children. FUNAM has participated in radio and television programmes. Since 1982 FUNAM conducted more than 50 courses on environmental issues, and its booklets and technical proposals are widely used in Argentina. FUNAM also contributed to the closure of Los Gigantes Uranium mining, and started national and international campaigns against environmental destruction.
Fundacion Natura is an Ecuadorian non-profit, non-governmental organisation whose mission is to promote a national conscience dedicated to an improved, just and integrated quality of life for the population and the conservation of the environment. In order to achieve its goal, Fundacion Natura promotes policies and actions targeted to meet human needs and to guarantee the continuance of ecological processes primarily in the areas of environmental education, communications, conservation of biodiversity and environmental law.
Professor Flint, Chief of the Fauna Section of the Russian Central Laboratory for Nature Conservation is particularly noted for his work for the preserving of the Siberian cranes. His project is a joint Russian-USA effort, which he has led in partnership with Dr. George Archibald.
Environmental Management Journal
Founded in 1976 by Robert de Santo, this influential environmental journal publishes major articles designed to be particularly useful to scientists and decision-makers.
Diario El Comercio
This Peruvian daily newspaper, founded in 1839, regularly publishes influential articles on the environment. Each World Environment Day Diario el Comercio pays tribute to individuals and organisations who have made significant contributions to conservation in Peru.
As Mayor of Istanbul, Mr. Dalan has transformed the Golden Horn, a polluted industrial and residential area by planting trees, improving the landscape and creating parks. His achievement is a model for many cities.
In 1980, Mr. Cuyvers a Belgian, founded the Mare Nostrum Foundation to campaign for the sustainable development and management of the oceans. He is producing a television series, "The Blue Revolution", for the Public Broadcasting Service in the United States.
Herman Contraries Manfredi
A Chilean Agronomist and Master of Soil Sc. of the University of California, who organised very successful national courses in Chile and Venezuela, in natural resources management and conservation, training more than 23000 individuals until 1979.
He later initiated similar environmental education and media programmes in other parts of Latin America.
College of African Wildlife Management
Since its establishment in 1963, the college has trained over 1,000 graduates from Africa in wildlife management. These graduates now fill key conservation positions throughout the continent.
Since 1973 Mr. Clark has created and taught courses at the University of Aberdeen in environmentally sound management of development policies. To date, over 1,000 individuals from developing countries have received training.
