F. Sherwood Rowland

F. Sherwood Rowland

Professor Rowland and his colleague, Professor Mario J. Molina, were the first to identify the threat from the commonly used chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) to the earth's stratospheric ozone layer, which protects life on earth from excessive ultraviolet radiation. This work contributed significantly to the scientific base of the 1987 Montreal Protocol to restrict chemicals which deplete the ozone layer. Professor Rowland's further measurements of CFCs, methane and other atmospheric trace gases furnish important information relative to possible future changes in the global atmosphere.
