Martin Wyatt Holdgate
A distinguished scientist and administrator who has made significant contributions to the protection of the British and global environment.
He played a leading part in the establishment of the first conservation measures for Antarctica, led scientific research on nature conservation in Britain, and was Chief Environment Scientist and Deputy Secretary (Environment Protection) in the UK Department of the Environment from 1976 to 1988. He led UK delegations to the preparatory committee for the Stockholm Conference, and played an active part in the UNEP Governing Council, of which he was president in 1983-84.
He has been Director General of IUCN - the World Conservation Union - since April 1988. He was elected interim president of the Global 500 Forum at a meeting in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992.
