Sidney Holt

For the past three decades Dr. Holt, a marine biologist, has been a leader in marine mammal conservation.

He organised the 1976 Bergen Conference, which defined the status of marine mammals and led to the 1984 global plan of action for the conservation, management and utilisation of marine mammals.

His expertise contributed to the adoption in 1982 of the worldwide moratorium on commercial whaling by the international whaling commission, and the designation of the Indian Ocean as a whale sanctuary.
