Dear Global 500 Laureates
I write once again to ask you to lend your support to the biggest marine conservation battle at this time in Australia – protecting the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef.
As you may be aware, the issue of new and intensive industrialisation along the Great Barrier Reef coastline has received a lot of attention from communities, conservationists and affected industries along the Reef in recent years. In 2012, UNESCO expressed ‘extreme concern’ about the issue and has reiterated its concern this week about the Australian Government’s lack of progress on improving management of development along the Reef coast. The Thomas Foundation – www.thomasfoundation.org.au - has scrutinised the issue and was keen to explore the scientific community’s view on the situation. They funded Dr Leanne Fernandes to work with some key scientists to determine if there was consensus on the issue and what needs to be done.
A joint statement in regard to this matter has been prepared and which has been endorsed by the Australian Coral Reef Society and the International Society for Reef Studies (see www.earth2ocean.com)
Once we have a few endorsements from the group of Global 500 Laureates, then we’ll create a separate endorsements “section” within the document to highlight your support.
Meantime, please do also forward onto any other interested colleagues. The statement will, ultimately, be released to the public, media, NGOs and made available to decision-makers who can influence the future of the Great Barrier Reef.
Please do let me know if you decide to sign on and thank you very much for helping out on this critical World Heritage and marine conservation issue.
